A 16-year-old girl died in hospital after she was struck by a vehicle in a northeast Edmonton intersection Thursday afternoon.
Police shut down 79 Street and 118 Avenue to investigate the serious collision just before 1 p.m.
Officers said it was reported the girl was crossing from the south side of 118 Avenue to the north side, in a traffic-light controlled crosswalk, when she was struck by a 2013 Ford Fusion heading west on 118 Avenue.
Police said in a media release Friday afternoon that the traffic lights were green for east and westbound traffic along 118 Avenue.
The pedestrian was treated on scene and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, the Edmonton Police Service said early Thursday afternoon.
Family told Global News the teenager passed away.
The 22-year-old man driving the Fusion was not injured, police said.
The intersection was shut down for several hours while the Major Collision Investigation Section investigated. Alcohol and drugs are not considered factors, according to police. Charges were pending on Friday, EPS said.
