In the teaser clip, the 50-year-old singer revealed intimate details on how her mental health has affected relationships with her family members. “The fact that there’s such stigma about mental illness means that the illness doesn’t get talked about,” O’Connor said. “It’s not easy for families of mentally ill people. We can be difficult.”
Last month, O’Connor broke down in a video posted to social media. In the distressing post, she talked about personal battles and her suicidal thoughts, “I have been thinking about it for a year, actually. I thought about it for a year before I did it,” she told Dr. Phil about the video.
In the season premiere episode of Dr. Phil, the Nothing Compares To You singer will touch on her childhood and the alleged abuse she endured from her mother, Marie, “Every day of our lives, she ran a torture chamber. She was a person who would delight and smile in torturing you.”
O’Connor’s full interview with Dr. Phil will air Sept. 12.
